The Small Sparks Fund was an innovative microgrant scheme designed to support hyper-local, community-led projects, that strengthen connections and build resilient neighbourhoods across Herefordshire.
All awards have been made and this fund is now closed.


About Small Sparks Fund
Herefordshire Council was allocated £2.1m of UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) to support local communities and businesses over the next three years.
Small Sparks had £50,000 to support small-scale ideas that bring people together, build local connections, and strengthen community resilience. It is worked with HCF to administer this fund.
Grants of up to £1,000 were made available to support informal, grassroots initiatives and all projects had to be delivered by 28th February 2026.
Priority was given to inclusive and accessible community activity that supported the following:
- Create local opportunities
- Strengthen community bonds
- Share skills and time
56 awards were made to a variety of grassroots projects across Herefordshire.

What could be funded?
Small resident-led projects that support the following:
- Bring people together or build social connections
- Improve quality of life in the local area
- Create new opportunities or support community action
Who could apply?
- Residents and informal groups (with a sponsor if required)
- Local community organisations, clubs, or groups
- Charities and CICs
- Must deliver the project in Herefordshire
- Applicants must have access to a UK bank account in the group’s name or via a supporting organisation.
Example activities
- Starting a club, group, or team
- Creating a community garden or shared space
- Running a neighbourhood or intergenerational event
- Activities that encourage volunteering or skill-sharing
